Welcome to JJ’s Headlines!
Here we’re sharing our favorites each month from upcoming events, must try restaurants, to products we desire and more in Boston and beyond. This is our monthly roundup of things that are getting our attention that we want to share with you. You may see some of our client's here from time to time, as we are passionate about what they're doing as well! We hope you enjoy these as much as we do!
JoJo & Janelle
We’re already big fans of Frenchie in the South End, so we were so excited to hear that their team will be opening up a sister restaurant, Colette, in Porter Square at the beginning of 2019! The menu will be similar to it’s siblings (Frenchie & Petit Robert Bistro), and you can currently get a sneak peek of the interiors on their Instagram page, @colette1924! We’ll be making reservations, des que possible!
The Financial Gym
We’ve been hearing a lot about the Financial Gym over the last few months from podcasts to a segment on the Today Show, this company seems to be everywhere - kudos to their PR team! The Financial Gym founded by Shannon McLay, offers one-on-one financial guidance to help individuals better manage their finances. If saving more money is one of your new year’s resolutions, this may be the perfect resource for you. Think of it like a personal trainer for your finances. Whether you need to put together a plan to payoff student loans, debt, save money, spend smarter, buy real estate or travel, the Financial Gym helps individuals reach their financial goals. Memberships start at $99/month that you can cancel at any time so you’re not locked into a year long commitment. There are also special rates for students. - JJ
Skiing out west is a special experience for us New Englanders whether it’s your first time or you’re a frequent flyer to hit the slopes. Though we love our mountains here, there’s just something about that clean mountain air, untouched powder, plenty of open trails to keep advanced skiers and riders out on the mountain all day, and of course beautiful resorts and ski towns with a life of their own. Aspen, Colorado has it all and will always have a special place in my heart since it’s where I got engaged and experienced Colorado skiing for the first time. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or taking a stroll through the charming town there’s plenty to do on the mountain and at the base. The Little Nell, Hotel Jerome or the St. Regis in Aspen are located in the heart of downtown allowing you to walk to the Silver Queen Gondola, award winning restaurants, night life, spas, the Aspen Art Museum, ice skating and a SOULCYCLE pop up (“Destination Soul”) open until the end of March if you’re looking to burn some extra holiday calories. And what’s a ski town without apres ski hot spots? The Little Nell hotel bar and Cloud Nine, a ski-in, ski-out restaurant and bar is where you’ll want to go. Lastly, we would recommend making dinner reservations at Matsuhisa, The Monarch and Campo de Fiori. Note when booking your trip, the X Games return to Aspen January 24-27! - JGW
TIEM Spin Shoes
Needless to say we let ourselves indulge a little bit this holiday season, and so with the start of the new year, there are NO excuses to get back into our workout routines. We’re both loyal to our spin studios, but were looking for some new gear to help motivate us to get back into the saddle. These TIEM spin shoes not only look sleek, but are so comfortable, and work with majority of studio bikes! Now there are really no excuses to kick off the new year on the right foot. -JJ
Mary Poppins Returns
Get your popcorn ready! One of our favorite childhood movies is coming back to the big screen on December 19th and we can’t wait! Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to Mary Poppins, which takes place 20 years after the original, has Emily Blunt playing Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke, the original “Bert” coming back, but playing Mr. Dawes Jr. this time around. Cosmopolitan published this fun slideshow showing us what the new cast looks like next to their original counterparts. - JGW
CorePower Yoga, Back Bay
We’re already pledging to get back on our best fitness routines for the new year, and with the new CorePower Yoga Back Bay studio opening soon, we really will have no excuse. The new Back Bay location will join the list of their studios in Fenway, Seaport, and the South End. For all new CorePower yogi’s - they offer one week free classes upon signing up! New year, new you, and no excuses! - JD
It’s that time of year when us New Englanders start thinking about ski trips and long weekend getaways. One destination that’s always at the top of our list is Stowe, Vermont. There is something for everyone in this ski town. Even if you aren’t hitting the slopes, you can still have an action packed weekend visiting Von Trapp Brewery, dining out, taking a gondola ride, indulging in a spa day, ice skating or snowmobiling. You can do as much or as little as you want just be sure to pack layers! As for lodging, one of the most convenient and luxurious places to stay is The Lodge at Spruce Peak formerly known as Stowe Mountain Lodge. It could be a wonderful spot to ring in the new year if you haven’t made plans yet! - JGW
If you’re wondering what everyone’s doing in Miami showing off beautiful galleries and unique pieces of art, here’s the deal, for us Americans, Art Basel is sort of like the Super Bowl week of art in Miami. Art Basel founded in 1970, stages the world’s premier art shows for modern and contemporary art in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami to bring together artists, galleries and noteable collectors. Throughout the weekend there are a number of VIP parties sponsored by various luxury brands and celebrity sightings. ArtNews is keeping enthusiasts updated on all things happening at Art Basel in Miami so you can follow along from home. - JGW
by Jen Royle
The North End is adding a new restaurant to their roster, but this one comes with a twist. TABLE, by Jen Royle, is opening on Hanover Street December 19th and will host 2-3 seatings a night, where guests will be seated together at two long custom tables! We can’t wait to dig our forks into the 15 layer eggplant parm, or the carbonara! Also, they’ll be open for Brunch on Sunday’s, so North End residents can enjoy some chicken & waffles, or breakfast flatbread in the comfort of their own neighborhood. As Chef/Owner, Jen Royle says, “come as strangers, leave as friends”!
Google Home Hub
While there are a few items on both of our lists, we both have our eye on this particular gift! The new Google Home Hub is the perfect gift for anyone on your list! While we multitask year round, this time of the year can be particularly hectic so we can use all the help we can get. From helping to personalize your morning routine, to finding the most delicious recipes for your holiday dinner, The Google Home Hub seems to do it all - finally an Elf on the Shelf that actually helps out! - JD
This mug should be on everyone’s wish list this holiday season. The Ember Mug connects to your phone through their app and notifies you once your drink has reached the perfect temperature. And since hot cocoa season is upon us, this is the ideal gift for everyone on your list (including your own)!
Thom Solo Shoes
If you want to walk a mile in Lady Gaga or Carrie Underwood’s shoes, you may want to hit up Bostonian, Thom Solo. Those fierce women are just a few of who he has designed for, amongst many others! His shoes are truly works of art, and this November 11th, guests will be able to see 4 of his custom designs at the Peabody Essex Museum Light & Sound Gala. Tickets are still available for the Gala’s dance, so make sure you grab yours and bring your own dancing shoes (hopefully soon you’ll be able to wear a pair of Thom’s)!
90+ Cellars Holiday Gift
Our friends at 90+ Cellars have created a unique gifting program this holiday season. One of the fastest growing wine brands in America, 90+ Cellars, is printing custom label bottles of their reds, whites and bubbly for business and individuals. We think it’s perfect for corporate or social gifting, especially the 187ml mini prosecco bottles. Get creative and make your own holiday greeting or brand your bottles with your company logo. Custom label wines are sold by the case.
As we prepare for the holiday season, we are reminded of ways we can give back to deserving charitable programs. One day that we look forward to every holiday seasons is #GIVINGTUESDAY. A national day of giving back that always falls the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. If you have been wanting to support a cause that’s dear to you or support a friend’s fundraising initiative, you can do so online on November 27th! We all have friends running the Boston Marathon for a charitable organization so give them the gift of support on CrowdRise.
Alexandre Birman Mules
One of the biggest fashion trends we are seeing this season in womenswear is plaid. Storefronts and online shopping homepages are drenched with variations of the print from full plaid suits to overcoats and yes, shoes. Think a toned-down Cher in Clueless! I’m loving this trend because it brings me back to my equestrian days! If you aren’t ready to jump all in, check out the Evelyn Plaid Mules complete with a feminine bow and subtle print by Brazilian footwear designer Alexandre Birman. - JGW
Wellfleet Oyster Festival
Rose season may be over, but thankfully oysters are a year-round thing here in New England. The 18th annual Wellfleet Oyster Festival is taking place on October 13 & 14th, and this two day celebration never disappoints. There’s plenty of activities for everyone, but one of the weekend’s most popular events, the Oyster Shuck-Off kicks off on Saturday afternoon. Rain or shine, we’re there! - JJ
Wasik’s The Cheese Shop
The Cheese Shop, located in downtown Wellesley - in the most charming space in town - is where you will find gourmet cheeses and specialty foods like honey, chocolates, olive oil, sea salts, chutney, spices and sauces. But let’s face it, this family operated business is known for its wine and cheese. It’s been their thing since 1964! Something on our social to do list is taking one of their cheese classes with cheesemonger and affineur Brian Wasik. This shop has become our go to for gifts and cocktail parties, and now with the holidays coming up, the shop will soon be taking orders for specialty fruit pies and gift baskets. - JJ
Belkin Family Lookout Farm
‘Tis the season for apple picking in New England! Lookout Farm located in Natick, Mass. just 30 minutes outside of Boston, offers much more than tasty apples. The farm mantaines over 60,000 fruit trees including plums, peaches, pairs, a variety of apples for picking and also for the kids, a children’s play area complete with pony rides, hay climbing, farm animals, magic shows and face painting on the weekends. For the adults, finish the day at the Lookout Farm Hard Cider taproom where you’ll find farm-inspired craft ciders and beers! - JGW
